August 31, 1922 - October 28, 2010

Eugene W. Weith

Eugene W. Weith, age 88 passed away on October 28, 2010 at home with his family. He was born on August 31, 1922, in Morgan Point, Arkansas to William and Gladys Weith. His family later moved to Cleveland, Ohio. From an early age until age 16 he lived in a Masonic Orphanage in Cleveland where he attended public schools. After graduating high school he was employed by the Glidden Paint Company, Sherwin Williams, Pittsburg Plate and Glass Company and W. C. Richards Industrial Paint Company. While employed at these various companies, he held positions of Product Manager, Market Manager and Technical Service Director. While working for the Pittsburg Plate and Glass Company, he was transferred to Atlanta, GA and later moved to Hilton Head, SC after retirement.

Gene married Elsie Andrews Weith in 1946. They had one son, Gordon D. Weith. After Elsie's death in 1987, he met and married Winifred S. Kelley Sinclair. They moved to Savannah from Hilton Head in 1990.

Gene was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served as the coordinator of the Thomas Park Food Pantry for 19 years. After moving to Savannah, Gene became a relentless volunteer for many charitable organizations. For this work, he received the Herschel V. Jenkins Award, as well as the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award for 2002. In 2004, he was nominated by nearly a dozen agencies for his outstanding volunteer work. To honor his service to the community, the United Way gave him their first ever Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, he was named "Hometown Hero."

From handing out brown bags at the Thomas Park Food Pantry to conducting executive board meetings he provided unmatched service to the community. He volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank for seven years as a board member and Chairman of the Operations Committee. He was a board member for the Counsel of World Affairs for a number of years, and his latest service was as a mediator for the Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire. He enjoyed that work tremendously.

Gene was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Elsie, and one brother William Weith of Ohio. He is survived by his present wife of 22 years, Winifred Winnie, his son Gordon wife Diana, 2 grandsons, Birkin wife Janine and Caleb Weith, one great grandchild, Brenna Noelle, one sister , Marcetta Bohn of Painsville, Ohio, and 3 stepsons, Robert Katie, Richard Barbara, and Paul Kelley Tammy.

The family will meet with friends at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, Sunday, October 31, 2010.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn Street, on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 2:00PM. Burial will be held after the memorial service in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Lawrence Lee, Sean Kane, Joe Daniels, Jamie Downs, Tony Joiner and Bob Vouk, all these men who worked with and for Gene in the food pantry.

We would like to express our thanks to Compassionate Care Hospice for all their compassionate care and help for Gene and our family. Gene was an outstanding human being and a tireless worker for the homeless and helpless of Savannah for many years. His ministry at the Food Bank at St. Paul's will be missed. Gene ran the pantry with precision and purpose. He helped those less fortunate with phisical as well as spiritual food for many years. He did it for the love of God and his children hear on earth and will always be remembered for his tireless effort to be of service. I'm sure I can speak for all the folks at St. Paul's when I say God's speed brother Gene as you enter God's Kingdom and he says; 'This is one of my son's and I am well pleased.' Peace be with you always.

- Jim Weathers, Savannah, GA

I didn't know Gene well, but I did see him walking his pets around our neighborhood everyday. He would always take the moment to stop, wave and nod to us as we were off this way and that. Even a cat would walk along with him. I will miss seeing him each day. May the source of peace bring comfort to all who are in mourning. My deepest sympathies on behalf of our family to yours.
